The Franconian royal seat of Würzburg is today’s destination. Nestled in the picturesque wine landscape of Lower Franconia, directly on the Main river, Würzburg delights visitors with its baroque splendour, Franconian joie de vivre and lively atmosphere. The Residenz – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its magnificent halls and courtyard garden – towers impressively above the old city centre. From here, follow the route through the lively old town, taking in the imposing St. Kilian’s Cathedral, the Gothic St. Mary’s Chapel and the atmospheric market square. A walk across the historic Old Main Bridge is a highlight. Here, locals and visitors meet over a glass of Franconian wine – with a view of the Main and the Marienberg fortress perched high above the city. The climb to the fortress is rewarded with a fantastic panorama and a taste of medieval history.
Today take a scenic tour through the legendary Spessart – a paradise of deep forests, gentle hills and charming half-timbered towns. A highlight of the tour is a stop in Mespelbrunn, where the famous moated castle in the forest appears to come straight out of a fairy tale. A walk to the castle and a photo break in the picturesque setting are well worthwhile. The tour continues through the lovely Elsava Valley and the wine town of Marktheidenfeld, following the Main back to Lohr, where this impressive visit to the Spessart comes to an end.
The return journey continues after a leisurely breakfast.
