The Franconian royal seat of Würzburg is today’s destination. Nestled in the picturesque wine landscape of Lower Franconia, directly on the River Main, Würzburg delights visitors with its baroque splendor, Franconian joie de vivre and lively atmosphere. The Residenz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent halls and a magnificent courtyard garden, towers impressively in the old city center. From there, the route leads through the lively old town with the imposing St. Kilian’s Cathedral, the Gothic St. Mary’s Chapel and the atmospheric market square. An absolute highlight is the walk over the Old Main Bridge, where locals and visitors meet over a glass of Franconian wine – with a view of the Main and the Marienberg fortress towering high above the city. The climb up to the fortress rewards you with a fantastic panorama and a touch of the Middle Ages.
Today, a round trip through the legendary Spessart awaits you – a paradise of deep forests, rolling hills and charming half-timbered towns. A highlight of the tour is the stop in Mespelbrunn, where the famous moated castle in the middle of the forest seems to come straight out of a fairy tale. A walk to the castle or a photo break in the picturesque setting is well worthwhile here. Via the lovely Elsava Valley and the wine town of Marktheidenfeld, the journey continues along the Main back to Lohr, where this impressive round trip through the Spessart comes full circle.
