Deep green forests, enchanted valleys and rolling hills – the Spessart is one of the most mysterious and at the same time most enjoyable regions in Germany. In the middle of it all lies Lohr am Main, a charming half-timbered town on the river and the ideal starting point for discovering the nature, culture and cuisine of the Spessart.
Here, where carters and fairy-tale characters once roamed the woods, you can now hike, cycle or simply enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside. The town of Lohr itself enchants with its historic old town, fairytale castle with Spessart Museum and cozy riverside promenades along the Main. The Spessart is also a region for true connoisseurs. Franconian specialties such as game dishes from local forests, hearty sausages, handmade dumplings or the famous ›Spessart trout‹ can be found on many menus – often served fresh, regional and with a lot of heart.
The Franconian wine that grows around Lohr and in the neighboring Main Valley is the perfect accompaniment. Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus in particular impress with their fine freshness and regional typicity. Whether at the winegrower’s, in the wine tavern or at one of the traditional wine festivals – wine is not just drunk here, it is lived.
Arrival in Lohr am Main, the ›gateway to the Spessart‹. Check into your room at the elegant Hotel Franziskushöhe, in an idyllic location overlooking the town. Afterwards, free time until dinner.
The Franconian royal seat of Würzburg is today’s destination. Nestled in the picturesque wine landscape of Lower Franconia, directly on the River Main, Würzburg delights visitors with its baroque splendor, Franconian joie de vivre and lively atmosphere. The Residenz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent halls and a magnificent courtyard garden, towers impressively in the old city center. From there, the route leads through the lively old town with the imposing St. Kilian’s Cathedral, the Gothic St. Mary’s Chapel and the atmospheric market square. An absolute highlight is the walk across the Old Main Bridge, where locals and visitors meet over a glass of Franconian wine – with a view of the Main and the Marienberg fortress towering high above the city. The crowning glory of the day is a visit to the Juliusspital, one of the largest wineries in Germany with around 163 hectares of vineyards. The wines, especially Silvaner and Riesling, enjoy an international reputation. You will get to know the historic wine cellars beneath Würzburg’s city center on a guided tour including a tasting.
Today, a round trip through the legendary Spessart awaits you – a paradise of deep forests, rolling hills and charming half-timbered towns. A highlight of the tour is the stop in Mespelbrunn, where the famous moated castle in the middle of the forest seems to come straight out of a fairy tale. You will explore the romantic castle on a guided tour. Via the lovely Elsava Valley and the wine town of Marktheidenfeld, the journey continues along the Main back to Lohr, where this impressive round trip through the Spessart comes full circle.
Today you will get to know your vacation destination better as part of a guided tour. One highlight is the Old Town Hall on the market square, a Renaissance building dating from 1599 to 1601, which fascinates visitors with its impressive architecture and the historic ›Michaelsglocke‹ bell. Another landmark is the Bayersturm, which was built between 1330 and 1385. At 40 meters high, it offers a magnificent view over the town and the Spessart. Lohr Castle, originally built in the 14th century, is now home to the Spessart Museum, which offers fascinating insights into the region’s history. The afternoon is at your leisure. At the end of the day, you will be invited to an exclusive dinner at the hotel, accompanied by matching wines.
After breakfast you say goodbye to the idyllic Spessart.
