A trip we particularly recommend! While Amsterdam and the North Sea coast are always worth visiting, in some respects, other regions can be even more interesting. Lelystad is centrally situated for exploring these beautiful regions of the Netherlands. From Lelystad, all the sights of the Netherlands are easily reached – the port city of Enkhuizen on the IJsselmeer and the Zuiderzee Museum, the former world heritage island of Schokland, Giethoorn and the Weerribben nature reserve, the Hanseatic towns on the IJssel and the castles in De Veluwe.
On arrival day, first stop off in the former Hanseatic city of Deventer. During a city walk, discover the historic city centre of Deventer with its impressive building of the oldest weighing house in the Netherlands, which is now a museum. The local tour guide will take you past the city hall, the Grote Kerk, the Bergkerk and the oldest stone house in the Netherlands. And enjoy a wonderful view of the IJssel from the riverside promenade.
Lelystad, a relatively young city, is located on the Flevopolder, on reclaimed land. In Lelystad, directly on the shores of the IJsselmeer, the Batavia shipyard is the home to historic sailing ships that have been reconstructed in their original form. From Lelystad, the national road 302 leads across the IJsselmeer to Enkhuizen, a picturesque harbour town in the province of Noordholland. In Enkhuizen, visit the Zuiderzee Museum, a beautiful open-air museum. Continue onwards via Hoorn, an important port of the East India Company in the 17th century, to Volendam, a beautiful fishing village on the Markermeer. The tour then takes you to Amsterdam, for one of the legendary canal cruises. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon.
Today, first travel to the harbour town of Urk on the IJsselmeer. Enjoy a stroll through the harbour with a view of the sea before heading to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Schokland. Schokland was formerly an island that was connected to the mainland by a dyke. The local museum has a permanent exhibition on the history of the island and its embankment (admission not included). The tour then continues to the quaint Hanseatic town of Kampen in the IJssel delta. From the Spoorkade, enjoy the magnificent panorama that takes in large sailing ships and historic merchant houses. A visit to the historic Hanseatic cog in Kampen is also an option.
After breakfast start on the journey home. If time permits, we recommend a short stroll at your leisure through the small Hanseatic town of Elburg on Lake Veluwe.
