The home of the ocean liners! In the tranquil town of Papenburg on the River Ems, the Meyer Werft shipyard is home to the largest covered dry dock in Europe. Every year, some of the largest ocean liners, e.g. from AIDA or NCL, are launched here and ferried across the Ems to the North Sea. Papenburg is also the perfect base from which to explore the highlights of East and West Friesland. These include the charming town of Leer, the imposing Ems barrage in Gandersum and romantic Groningen in the Netherlands. A guided tour of the Ammerland region and a guided tour of the historic Dutch fortress town of Bourtange are also recommended.
Travel on the route of your choice to the Emsland region and the tranquil town of Papenburg. Check into your room at the comfortable Best Western Plus Hotel Papenburg, located directly on the main canal and within walking distance of the old town. After dinner together at the hotel, you can end the day individually.
After breakfast, you will visit the impressive Meyer Werft shipyard – home to the ocean liners. The huge site on the River Ems is home to the largest covered dry dock in Europe. Here you can experience at first hand how the luxurious cruise ships, as well as ferries and yachts, are built. After the visit, you will take a city tour of Papenburg. The city is closely linked to the tradition of shipbuilding. Papenburg is also known as the ›Venice of the North‹ due to the 40 kilometers of inland canals that run through the city. Your guide will show you the development of the city from a former fen colony to a lively and modern city.
Today you will explore East Frisia on a guided tour. One of the most modern barrages in Europe is located near Emden – an impressive piece of engineering: the Ems barrage Gandersum, which is built right across the Ems. Another highlight awaits you with the city tour in Leer – known as one of the most beautiful little towns in the region and the ›gateway to East Frisia‹. The picturesque old town with its historic town houses is a real gem. Here, the town’s past as an important trading and port city comes to life again.
After breakfast at the hotel, the return journey is on the route of your choice. We are happy to help you with program points along the way – if time permits.
